Season's Greetings from the Petersons!

December 1991

Greetings friends!

1991 has been a rather uneventful year for us, at least by Peterson standards. We still have the same jobs, the same kid (no new ones!), and live in the same place. There has been a little excitement, though!

Marti still works at AEtna. Her ``Corporate Model'' project was cancelled and now she has been working on a variety of smaller projects. She gets frustrated over things like seeing a million dollars spent on developing a program to throw away. AEtna's direction seems to be away from large computers and towards personal work stations networked together, so Marti is now working more on PCs.

John is still working on the Haskell project at Yale. They released a preliminary version of the Yale Haskell compiler last summer but now the Haskell group has begun a complete rewrite of the system. Our friends Maria and Juan from Venezuela left during the summer (Eric misses his best friend, Andres) so John hired a friend from our Utah days, Sandra Loosemore, to help with the Haskell project. Sandra keeps a very close eye on John's occasionally `bletcherous' code in the compiler. John also has been spending much of his time working on a new version of the Haskell report (which defines and documents the language) and helping some of the students with their research.

Eric has been going to Jumpin' Beans for over a year now. They have expanded greatly from last year and he has many friends there. He still studies movement education and 'boulders' on the front of the building with Daddy's help. He is very happy there but often unenthusiastic about waking at 6:30am to go there with mommy. He has been learning so much this year. He now knows his alphabet, the numbers, the months, days of the week, and many songs. Marti now has a large art collection supplied by Eric.

Marti's father, Fred Van Dyke, is settling into retirement. He sold the large family home and moved to an appartment (3600 S. Bannock #110, Englewood, CO 80110). He has managed to avoid serious hospital stays this year, but we are still very concerned about his frequent 'dizzy' spells, and wish we lived closer.

John's folks are still going strong. We visited them and the rest of the family in Denver this summer and got to go on many hikes and other activities with them. They took Eric on as many train rides as they could find while John went off to the Black Hills in South Dakota to climb the Needles and Devils Tower. They also drove out to Connecticut to visit us in the fall.

Our biggest event this summer was buying a house. We decided to stay in the same town, Wallingford (named after a town near Oxford in Endland). After spending months stomping through just about every house on the market, we finally settled on a nice 3 bedroom colonial near the center of town. It's nice to own a house again after all these years. We now have an official guest room for visitors.

We still rock climb frequently and Eric has been climbing with us quite a bit. He now has his own shoes, harness, and helmet, and has a few climbs at Ragged Mountain down pat. He is generally fearless on the rock but occasionally he just doesn't feel like climbing, and opts to play with his toys on the ground. At the Gunks in New York Eric much prefers riding his `mountain trike' up and down the carriage road to climbing rocks. But Eric has done a few longer climbs, including the beginners route on Whitehorse Ledge in New Hampshire and Catharsis in the Adirondacks. We also get out kayaking now and then and Eric likes to run the rapids sitting in Daddy's lap (Marti won't permit anything chalanging though!). Maybe we will buy a 2 seat kayak for John and Eric next year.
