Greetings friends!
1992 brings us another major change in our lives. We are expecting an addition to our family soon. We know the baby is a boy but we have not chosen a name yet. Marti is due in early January or so. All of us are very excited; Eric had been asking for a baby brother and is ready to teach him everything he knows. Marti is hoping to take around 6 months of maternity leave from Aetna to get our new little fellow off to a good start. John is ready to buy a second rock climbing harness for the little guy. We'll be sure to send everyone a birth announcement when the time comes.
Marti is still at Aetna but now works for a new (and better) boss in Middletown instead of Hartford. This is a much shorter commute and she has been working on a number of projects, mostly using Microsoft Basic running on PC's.
John remains at Yale and is still working on the Haskell project. His group has almost completed an all new version of the Haskell compiler and many improvements and extensions are on the drawing board.
Eric has now started his school career. He goes to developmental kindergarten - this is a program for students that are not quite ready for `real' kindergarten. It gives the children some extra time to adjust to the routine of school life. He started kindergarten while he was still 4 and will be 5 this month. He gets to ride the school bus with all the `big kids' now. Since his school is too far from his old daycare at Jumping Beans he now goes to a home daycare in our neighborhood.
Eric continues to rock climb and kayak with us. His biggest climb this year was the beginners route on Whitehorse Ledge - a seven pitch route in New Hampshire. We bought a two seat inflatable kayak to take him on river trips with us now. Marti always worries about her `baby' but John keeps him safe! Eric joined us on a number of trips this year - his favorite was to southern Utah where he especially enjoyed hiking slot canyons (very narrow slots deep in the rock). This is one place where he has a definite advantage over his larger parents. He also spent time with Grandma and Grandpa Peterson while John ran off rock climbing.
Marti's father, Fred Van Dyke, is doing well this year. He still works occasionally for Rocky Mountain Prestress, helping them catch up on filing and printing crunches. They always seem glad to see him, and help to watch that he doesn't over do it. He took a long road trip this year, and seems quite content to be independent.
We had both of Marti's sisters visit this June. Anna came with her daughter Heather, 9, and Nina brought her youngest, Sarah, 4. We are sorry we missed seeing their husbands and Nina's other children, and look forward to our next opportunity. We had fun showing then a bit on the East, despite Marti's troubles with morning sickness. Our new son will have a cousin just his age as Anna is now expecting her second child next April. Nina's family has since moved up to Spokane, Washington. Now we cover the Northwest, Central South, and Northeast. We couldn't be much further apart and still live in the same country!
John's folks are also doing well. They continue to travel and hike, although Mom had to slow down for a while after a hiking injury. We had a family reunion in May with all John's brothers while visiting Zion. This fall Mom and Dad drove all the way out here with John's aunt Gretchen, visiting from Japan. We were priviledged to attend a suprise dinner honoring her missionary work.
Our address remains the same. Visitors are always welcome!
John, Marti, Eric, and ????.
