New Peterson Arrives

A new Peterson, Jay Robert, was born January 6. He has grown steadily and is now the terror of the house. He walks and climbs stairs and desperately wants to get into places he's not allowed, like Eric's room. He communicates using a newly discovered dialect of baby talk. His current projects include inspecting items in the recycling bin and acquiring ornaments from the family Christmas tree.

Jay is currently attending Jumping Beans daycare, the one recommended to him by his brother. Other kids there have taught him many new things and shared their germs and toys with him.

Jay continues the Peterson tradition of large feet.

School Continues for Eric

Eric graduated from developmental kindergarten in June and now goes to regular kindergarten. His academic performance is good; he is particularly talented in mathematics. While he likes his new teacher, Eric is not so sure he approves of getting homework.

Before and after school Eric attends daycare run by the local YMCA. He enjoys playing games and making craft projects with other kids. He also has been taking a basketball class at the YMCA and is doing very well at it.

In addition to his school work, Eric spends his time playing war games with Matt, the next-door neighbor, and collecting stuffed doggies. His imagination still runs wild in a world inhabited by Clifford the Big Red Dog.

New Climbing Gym Opens: Five Year Old Wins Contest

A new rock climbing gym opened just minutes from the Peterson household. While everyone in the family now visits the gym frequently, Eric has become the leading 5 year old climber at the gym. At a climbing competition held in the fall Eric took first place among the five year olds (OK, he was the only five year old ...) and impressed everyone with his efforts.

Haskell Project Continues

John continues his research at Yale on the Haskell project. They continue to improve the Haskell compiler and add new features to the system.

In June, John was attending a conference in Albuquerque when a colleague of his in the computer science department, David Gelernter, was seriously injured by a letter bomb. This occurred just a couple floors above John's office. David is recovering well and is scheduled to start teaching again next month.

AEtna Loses Key Employee

Marti took a six month maternity leave from her job at AEtna to take care of Jay, returning to work in July. Unfortunately, she wasn't content with her position in corporate america and by November decided to leave Aetna. For the moment, she is spending more time with her family.

Petersons Travel

In the spring we visited Oregon and saw John's brother Jim and his family. Eric had a great time playing with his cousins Katherine (6) and Diana (4). Since Katherine didn't have training wheels on her bike, Eric had to learn to ride without them.

We also visited Marti's sister Nina in Spokane. They were just moving into a house and we helped them start unpacking. Eric got to play with his cousin Sarah who is the same age as he is. Their other two girls, Karen and Rachel, enjoyed taking care of little Jay. David, who is now 16, went rock climbing with us on some very nice rocks right in the town of Spokane.

Our August trip was to the YMCA camp in Estes park. We were joined by our niece Rachel from Spokane as well as the Hudaks from Connecticut. While in Estes Park we did a number of climbs. Brad Dierschow (12), the son of Marti's cousin, proved to be an outstanding climber. However, during our attempt at a high peak he was almost blown away by high winds and we had to retreat.

John's Parents Doing Well

Grandpa and grandma Peterson continue their active lifestyles. They joined us for trips to Las Vegas and Estes Park as well as visiting us in Connecticut on their way to Nova Scotia. Grandma Peterson also came to visit in January to help with the new baby. Jay has seen quite a bit of his grandparents and is especially fond of his grandma.

Marti's Father in Hospital

Grandpa Van Dyke has had a tough year. After an operation in January, he was in the hospital until April. He returned to his apartment in July, but had a relapse in October that landed him back in the hospital. The road to recovery is long and challenging. Life has changed a great deal for Fred, as he can no longer talk.

Marti has been traveling to Denver a lot to help her father. Another trip is scheduled for January.

New Cousin for Jay

Marti's sister Anna in Houston presented Jay with a cousin his own age in April. Although we have not yet met Amber Rose we hear she is a happy, healthy baby who is already as big as Jay.

Ask Eric

Dear Eric: why do babies cry?

Because they have no manners. Eric.
