John is still with the Haskell group at Yale. The group is currently (still!) working on a version of the Haskell compiler for PC's and is now in a partnership with Microsoft to develop a new way to do interactive animations using Haskell. Playing with animations is certainly a lot more fun than actually doing work! Marti is busy at home with the kids, the dog, and her volunteer interests. She is still on the local board of directors of Habitat for Humanity and assists with the computer classes at Eric's school. Another one of Marti's projects was creating a web page for the local climbing gym (www.ezlink.com/~prime). We all have web pages, too. If our Christmas photo doesn't bring us close enough, check us out on line.
Eric's favorite things are playing games on the computer and annoying his little brother. He is doing fine in school, notably in math and reading. He enjoys math, computers, music, and reading. Homework and creative writing, though, aren't much fun for him. He had to change schools this year because of redistricting and has had to make new friends. Eric loves books and looks forward to reading every night at bedtime. John has been reading him Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. What they will tackle next?
Since climbing and kayaking are too boring for Eric, he decided to take up fishing. He tells anyone who will listen about the time he caught a huge pickeral. He is very excited to finally have a dog to play with. Eric loves Jack, but the novelty of walking and feeding the dog is wearing off.
Jay spent the year in his terrible threes. He keeps telling us that he is the boss in this family and sure gets upset when we don't do as he says! Jay enjoys Jumpin' Beans pre-school twice a week, and has learned to write his name now. He likes to ride his trike and is a good hiker. Jay tried cross country skiing last winter and wants to do it again this winter. He is quite adept at using the computer and thinks it belongs to him. This Christmas he wants Santa to build a roller coaster for him in the back yard. Jay also loves books and his current favorite is Calvin and Hobbes - at least the ones where Calvin refuses to eat his dinner.
Travels this year include another trip to North Carolina and West Virginia in the spring for lots of really good climbing. Eric did climbs on Looking Glass Rock, Stone Mountain, and Seneca Rocks. Jay likes to climb too but doesn't like to go more than 5 or 10 feet off the ground yet so he can't keep up with his big brother yet on the climbs. This summer Marti and the boys took the train out to Denver. The kids found Amtrak to be an exciting adventure! Marti was able to attend her 20th high school reunion before John and Alastair Reid, who works for John at Yale, drove out to join the family. Alastair has learned to kayak and we drove to Jackson (where Eric thought the Snake River was the best fun he had ever had in the inflatable kayak) and then to Spokane where Marti's sister Nina was kind enough to give the kids a break while we climbed at Squamish in British Columbia. We also managed to kayak in Oregon with our friend Suzanne Remilard.
John's parents are still active and healthy. They still travel all over the world as well as volunteer for many different groups. They generously took the boys to Yellowstone while Marti and John got to do some kayaking without distractions. Our niece Karen visited us this summer and had a grand time seeing the East with us.
Best wishes, the Peterson Family
