Christmas Greetings 2007

Fall color near Gunnison

Greetings from Gunnison!

John remains at Western State College in the Computer Information Science department. His computer camp will be running again this summer so send your high school kids to Gunnison this summer.  The big news is that Marti is now working in the IT department at Western.  She was worried that her computer skills were 15 years old but found out that the technology that makes Western run is 20 years old so everything is working out just fine.

Eric, now 20, transferred to Western last January but ultimately decided that  he wasn’t ready for college yet.  After a brief stint as a plumber (all of 2 weeks) he chose to re-evaluate career options.  As far as we can tell, he’s entered the “odyssey”, described as “the decade of wandering that frequently occurs between adolescence and adulthood. “ (thanks to the New York Times for letting us in on the newly discovered phase of life!)  His summer was spent being the self-proclaimed “worlds greatest raft guide” at Scenic River Tours.  He’s now working in the Gunnison airport, helping clueless Texans find the vans to Crested Butte.  Rumor has it that he might try college again next fall.  Meanwhile, though, he plans to raft guide again this summer.

Jay is now almost 15 and is a freshman at Gunnison High School.  He combines a sharp intellect with a desire to completely avoid all homework, leading to much parental agony.  His teachers are remarkably unconcerned about this and assure us that he’ll grow out of this phase.  We’ll see.  He excels with computers and spends a lot of time making Internet animations.  He occasionally can be forced into outdoor activities but remains committed to a computer-based lifestyle as much as possible.

Our year started with some very difficult times.  Grandma Peterson was diagnosed with cancer and spent spring going through various cancer treatments.  We made frequent visits to Denver and had many chances to be with her during this period.  She was able to continue going out on short trips, including a raft trip with Eric.  In spite of her condition, she remained upbeat and optimistic throughout.  Unfortunately she lost her struggle and passed away in June.  Robert is still living in Windsor Gardens and is adjusting to life without his partner of over 50 years.  All of us miss her dearly but we’ve been comforted by the support of our family and friends.  We were able to celebrate her life with services in Denver and Nebraska and were overwhelmed by the heartfelt tributes from the many people who knew her so well. Robert remains active and can still hike 3 or 4 miles even at 86.

As usual, we’re always glad to have visitors – please come by for some Gunnison-based fun.
