Eric's Climbing Page

I've been climbing since I was just 3 years old. This is a picture my first climb at Whitehorse ledge. I was too small to rap by myself, so I'm strapped to Dad, and he rapelled with me sitting on his shuolders. I like kayaking better than climbing but sometimes climbing is fun. I like to climb in the gym because I can get up climbs that Dad can't.

This is Devil's tower in Wyoming. I broke the age record here by climbing Durance Route when I was six years old. After I finished and checked at the ranger station to see if I was the youngest they had me speak to some tourists about climbing and one person even asked for my autograph!

Dad thought I was ready to tackle High Exposure in the Gunks when I was eight. I felt bad for chickening out, but this is a scary climb! I have just succeeded in climbing it a few weeks ago, at age 13. Dad thought I was ready to lead it, but I was happy to follow. While I was attempting it the first time this jerk on the High E ledge would not shut up about how Mom and Dad were endangering me and so on and so on. Mom listened for a while, and double checked their safety procedures. He kept harping. Then she told him firmly that they had concidered his advice, and the decision was up to them. He ranted on, saying that they were even endangering him, because he would undoubtedly have to recue us all when we fell. Finally mom suggested he should shut up, and be assured that they'd rather die unaided that have his assistance. His partner looked miserable. We're pretty sure he was the same guy that once told Mom and Dad that the Gunks was no place to take kids, because it's "... not the bakery!" I'd like to meet Mr. Not the Bakery again someday!
